Travel Tip: Semester At Sea Alternatives

Have you ever been jealous of kids who get to embark on a semester at sea?

Well, for those of us who don’t have a whole semester to spare, there are still some options for onboard education.

On cruise ships, cooking classes no longer mean watching someone else do all the work. And art education doesn’t mean joining kids in a playroom with a tin of Crayons.

For example, Princess Cruise Line’s ScholarShip@Sea Program now offers as many as 40 classes a voyage. We’re talking lectures and courses in photography, navigation, ceramics, and more.

Enrichment programs aboard Oceania Cruises’ new ship, the Marina, covers everything from digital photography to an artists-in-residence program

Meanwhile, the ship’s Bon Appetit Culinary Center teaches multi-session courses with hands-on instruction.

And Silversea’s onboard enrichment initiative, Silver Perspectives, now features as many as 200 expert speakers on 160 voyages.

Or try piano lessons from certified teachers at Crystal Cruises’s Creative Learning Institute.

And last, but not least, you actually can participate in the semester at sea program.

The Institute for Shipboard Education is offering a three-week learning cruise that’s set to sail through Central America in April. Best of all, it’s open to all ages.
