Travel Tip: Reconstruction Tours, Behind The Scenes

Locations in this article:  Columbia, SC

If you’re a fan of learning about the process as much as the product, then are some experiences you definitely want to check out.

I’m talking about reconstruction tours where visitors can actually see how things are done from the ground up.

The National Park Service is offering a Sneak Peek program at the Weir Farm in Western Connecticut, where park rangers lead guided tours to showcase the site’s restoration in progress.

This is the only National Park site dedicated to American art, and it serves as a retreat for artists and offering hands-on programs for visitors. And right now, you can actually get a behind-the-scenes look at the restoration process off the house and studios.

Meanwhile, Colonial Williamsburg has launched a year-long reconstruction of the Anderson’s Blacksmith Shop and Public Armoury.

During the restoration process, guests can assist with brick-making for the construction and cutting wood for floorboards that will be used in the final product.

And on the first Tuesday of every month, the Woodrow Wilson Family Home in Columbia, South Carolina, opens up for a hard-hat tour while it undergoes a complete restoration.

Visitors will learn about the process of restoring a historic home, everything from how to source authentic materials to conserving existing ones.
