Travel Tip: Exploring Culture Through Cuisine

In most big cities, you don’t have to choose between a cultural experience and a
culinary one. In fact, you can often use food to explore the history and culture
of a destination.

If you were to define Miami food, you could point to everything from Cuban to
Kosher influences. So, every Friday and Saturday, Miami Food Tours offers a
three-hour tour of the Art Deco District of South Beach, sampling all the
different types of cuisine that reflect the neighborhood.

For a more focused experience, try the Little Havana Food tour with Miami
Culinary Tours, where you get to meet the families who run these mom-and-pop
restaurants.

In Boston, you can’t visit the North End without being immersed in the city’s
Italian roots. So a chef named Michele Topar leads market tours of the
neighborhood.

Although most people associate New Orleans with beignets and po’boys, the
Culinary History Tour offers everything from an Oyster Crawl to a Creole and
Cajun tasting tour.

And, of course, New York is the ultimate melting pot, so Foods of New York Tours
has a number of culinary experiences—everything from a walking tour of Chinatown
to tastings at the Chelsea Market.
