Travel Tip: Choosing Your Summer Camp

It’s summer camp season, but do you know how to choose the right place for your kid?

Here’s what’s out there for today’s camper.

Your first stop should be the American Camp Association.

They have an accreditation program that goes beyond basic state licensing, and they’ve got more than 2,400 camps that have passed safety and operational standards.

Now think about what kind of experience is best for your child.

Today’s camps aren’t just about archery and swimming lessons.

For example, a California company called Pali Overnight Adventures has everything from Hollywood stunt camp to horseback riding to, one of my favorites, broadcast journalism camp.

And then, there are experiences that aren’t in a traditional setting at all. I’m talking about outdoor programs with Outward Bound or hiking and rafting trips with the Sierra Club.

A company called Broadreach Adventure Camp has experiential camps for teens around the world, from surfing in Costa Rica to eco-adventures in Honduras.

Bottom line: Summer camp doesn’t have to be about singing Kumbaya around a campfire when there’s a whole world out there to explore.
