Travel Tip: Black History Month Tours

In the travel world, the month of February isn’t just about Valentine’s Day fever.

It’s also Black History Month, and there are plenty of immersive experiences happening at major attractions around the country.

This year, Mount Vernon Estate and Garden is offering daily tours that explains slave life at the historic home of George Washington.

At the time of his death, there were more than 300 slaves living at the plantation, and their legacy has been kept alive by Washington’s records and other archeological research.

Or head to Cleveland to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Museum. Here, they’re focusing on African-American influences in music, from blues to soul to gospel.

The museum hosts free performances, lectures and other educational programing all month long.

Meanwhile, the Smithsonian Institution hosts a series of educational events throughout Washington, D.C.

That includes screenings of short films in partnership with the National Museum of African American History and Culture, and a live performance that illustrates an actual 1960 manual on preparing for a Civil Rights sit-in.

Bottom line: even if you think you’ve already been there, done that with a major museum or historic site, chances are this month you’ll find some new experiences that are worth checking out.
