Travel Tip: A Disability Rights Milestone & Accessible Travel Resources

This year, we celebrated the 20th anniversary of the American with Disabilities Act. But it doesn’t stop there—there are an increasing number of disabled travel resources out there to help.

USTravability.org is a new site launched in honor of the ADA anniversary, designed to be a one-stop shop for accessible travel resources. It’s got links to the special-needs pages for major airlines and airports, bus, train and cruise lines, along with links to state information and major organizations.

The U.S. government has its own page of resources. Just go to Disability.gov/transportation for information on the latest guidelines and laws.

One longtime favorite, The Society for Accessible Travel and Hospitality—at SATH.org—dates back to 1976. This site has information links, travel tips and news, and a calendar of upcoming conventions.

Of course, all of these resources are really a jumping-off point.

After all, just because a cruise ship is listed as being accessible doesn’t mean the entire ship is accessible, or that the ports of call are.

It’s crucial to be in contact with your travel provider. The more information you get the better you can prepare, and the more information you provide, the easier it will be for them to assist you.
