Travel Tip: Airlines & Airports with Tablets for Rent

Fabricskin Keyboard folioYou’ve heard the news, you can now use your electronic devices on planes even when you’re below 10,000 feet. That means e-readers, smartphones and, yes, tablets. That’s great news for those of you who HAVE tablets. For the rest of you, some airlines and airports are filling in the gaps with tablets for rent.

Hawaiian Airlines announced that passengers can rent iPad Minis on 14 of its routes. For $15 you get access to 100 hours of movies and TV shows, and play games and listen to music.

Southwest recently began offering access to DISH satellite TV to passengers who used their own tablets and laptops on Wi-Fi enabled flights. Now, they’ll even let you borrow an iPad 2 from lending libraries in Chicago, Denver and Oakland, so you can watch live and on-demand TV for free.

Alaska has tablets with movies and TV show that you can reserve for all its flights.

It’s not just up in the air. You’ll also find iPads to borrow at several U.S. airports. At Delta’s terminal at JFK, there are free iPads in the seating area with Internet access and also the ability to order food and drinks. At Minneapolis St. Paul, there are 2,500 iPad available for free public use.
