Also, stay hydrated… with water. Record-breaking heat and dehydration don’t mix well. A good rule of thumb is to drink at least one cup of water for every hour you are outside and to keep some headache medicine nearby. That way, even if you stay hydrated, you have a remedy for your less responsible friends. Additionally, balance out your time in the sun with breaks in the shade. This significantly reduces your likelihood of becoming overheated.

Another tidbit for travelers to keep in mind this year is their destination’s fireworks display — or a lack thereof. Local budgets recovering from economic slumps and wildfire threats across the country have caused numerous governments and companies to cut their July 4th fireworks celebrations this year.

This has proven especially true in Colorado, where firefighters are fighting rampant wildfires. Droughts in the Southwest and high temperatures in the South are also making it less appealing (or in many cases, illegal) for traditional fireworks displays to commence.

Beach-going travelers should also be aware of their destination’s water quality. The Natural Resources Defense Council released its annual guide to beach pollution, which includes a 5-star rating system of the nation’s 200 most popular beaches. There were 13 beaches that received 5 stars.

The states with the best beaches are Alabama, Massachusetts and New Hampshire. All of the tested beaches in these states rate between three stars and five stars.

Other states didn’t fare as well. Some of the worst beaches tested are in Indiana, Maine and Michigan. Florida, also did poorly, with 12 one-star beaches. However, seven of those were concentrated in the Tampa area, and Florida had 63 beaches tested, more than any other state.
