Holland: Like a Local & Peter’s Top 4 Local Experiences

Locations in this article:  Amsterdam, Netherlands

If you decide to cruise the waters of the Netherlands – take my advice – and check out these four local experiences. You will experience some of the best the Netherlands has to offer when you think like a local.

Amsterdam

This city is all about Eco friendly living – from the famed bikes to the growing popularity of herb gardens. Travel like the locals and go green! Check out Dekas, an old Dutch hothouse used to grow vegetables and flowers, turned into a restaurant. All produce is grown in the restaurant’s very own hothouse. It’s a locals favorite and a really cool spot in the city you won’t want to miss.

Volendam

You don’t get any more local than this tight knit community. Locals in Volendam are loyal to their favorite soccer club — FC Volendam. During a big match, you will find many of them out at the pubs, cheering on their favorite team. Check out their website to see their schedule.

Edam

This little town comes alive in the summer for both locals and tourists alike. Check out Dam Hotel and restaurant, a favorite for the locals right in the center of town with excellent views of the old town hall and those famous Dutch canals.

Rotterdam

This city was completely bombed out during World War II and doesn’t look like any other Dutch city; it’s completely modernized. Make sure you stop by the Hotel New York , one of the only buildings older than 100 years. For a modern experience, the Harbor Club is a local favorite for sushi and cocktails on a Friday or Saturday night.
