Ask Peter: Scoring Last Minute Deals & Honeymoon Planning

Locations in this article:  New York City, NY Portland, OR

Emily in South Carolina asked: What would be your suggestions for a honeymoon from December 19-23 that would be warm but not real expensive and when should we book it? We live in South Carolina and the wedding is on December 18 in Greenville, SC. We have looked at cruises and flying to Puerto Rico. We are open to any suggestions even if it isn’t warm.

Peter replied: If you’re getting married on December 18 and you want to take a cruise, whatever you do, don’t take a cruise that leaves on the 19th. Fly to where the cruise is on the 19 and leave on a cruise on the 20. The last thing you want to do is miss the boat or have your luggage miss the boat on your honeymoon.

However, Christmas cruises are a problem for most honeymoon couples. You know why? Thousands of screaming children. And I don’t think that lends itself well to those very special romantic moments at sea.

You also interested in mentioned Puerto Rico and I love Vieques. It’s about a twenty minute flight from San Juan. And there are some great hotels and resorts there. Or check out Grenada, which is way down south in the Caribbean. Get yourself a great hotel on Grand Anse Beach and you’ll own it. It won’t be overly crowded and it’s not too hot but wonderfully warm and it’s not overly crowded with screaming kids.

Cheryl in Portland emailed: Do you think the hotel room safes are reliable? We’ve used them in the past. Do you have doubts about their ability to prevent theft?

Peter replied: If you put your stuff in a hotel room safe, look at the disclaimer. The hotel is not liable for anything you lose in that room safe. The only thing the hotel is liable for is the safe deposit boxes behind the front desk. I’m not a big fan of hotel room safes, especially when they charge you for their use. I do like the later generation room safes in hotels that are big enough to hold your laptop and they charge it, which is a pretty good function.

Scott McCartney from the Wall Street Journal came up with a great idea about how not to leave stuff in your hotel room–put one shoe in the safe. You won’t leave anything in the safe because you can’t walk out of the room with one shoe on.
