Slideshow: Taiwan’s Regional Festivals

In Yanshui, thousands of revelers flood the streets, standing in front of bottle rocket “castles” that house hundreds or thousands of the fireworks, to be shot directly into the crowd. Also parading the area’s narrow roadways are gangs of costumed men and women carrying structures made of wood and metal- shrines to the deities- and when two such gangs meet they shoot rockets at onlookers and each other, in a battle of sorts.
