Maggie tweeted to Peter: any recommendations on traveling to the west coast of Ghana in August?

Peter replied: There is actually pretty good weather in July and August in Ghana. the climate is warm and tropical all year long, make sure you bring light, cotton, and washable clothing.

You’re smart to go to Ghana now. They’ve really gotten their act together, and the hotel infrastructure has improved dramatically. Be sure to take enough time because you don’t just want to go to Accra, where most airlines fly into. Check out the castles of the Western region, especially cross at Dixcove, which dates back to 1693, and Fort S. Antonio at Axim, which dates back to 1515. Plus, don’t forget the beaches–Busia Pleasure beach, Sports Club and Miami Beach are some of my favorites.

In terms of travel safety bottom line is of course you consult your doctor before you go for anti-malaria treatment as well as the yellow fever vaccination. I’m a big fan of medical repatriation and evacuation insurance. And whether you’re going to Ghana or Georgia, it’s best to drink only from the bottled water.

Andrea from Santa Cruz, New California asked: I’m looking for travel in China with a company called Gate One Travel. Gate One is not rated by the Better Business Bureau but has mostly good reports on many chat-boards and only bad reports are cited, but what should I do? Where can I go? And is this a good guide to go with?

You can go by the Better Business Bureau as your judge, but I say go beyond that. Go where you live and check with your own state attorney general and their department of consumer affairs and see if they’ve received any complaints. Since you’re in California, find out if the company is considered a certified seller of travel because that’s also run out of the attorney general’s office . California requires all sellers of travel to register with the attorney general’s office and display their registration number on all of their advertising. It’s a good idea to do and no matter who you book with and no matter how few bad reviews they have it’s always a good idea to pay with a credit card to protect yourself. And any company that asks for a huge deposit or for you to pay in full 6 months out is a red flag for me.
