Travel Tip: Wacky Theme Cruises

Locations in this article:  New Orleans, LA

Don’t get me wrong, I’m a fan of taking cruises, but once in a while, some seriously wacky stuff comes across my desk. You can’t make this stuff up.

Have you heard of the Barbie Experience? That’s right, Royal Caribbean is rolling out Barbie-themed staterooms that will be available across the entire fleet by next March. We’re talking Barbie bedding, toiletries and even toothbrushes, as well as access to Barbie-themed events. And yes, you have to pay extra for the privilege

Now, I’ve seen a number of culinary cruises and some of them can be pretty cool. The upcoming Top Chef cruise on the Celebrity Constellation sounds great in theory—but the foodie experiences are all on board. The cruise itself is going to Key West and Cozumel.

In my opinion, you’re better off picking a culinary trip like Silversea’s cruise to the Mediterranean which actually involves excursions to the local markets and dining experiences based on the regional cuisine.

And here’s one that actually seems fitting for people traveling by sea: a steampunk cruise. Yes, it’s a full week on Royal Caribbean’s Navigator of the Seas from New Orleans to the Caribbean. It’s packed with authors, speakers, and yes, plenty of people in costume.

What’s next, the Kate Gosselin cruise? Oh wait, they already tried that one…and no one signed up.
