Locations in this article:  Houston, TX

Everyone has a mind of their own when it comes to travel this week. From a 2-year-old grounding a plane to a woman arrested for unwarranted personal grooming, young and old are being judged. Even whole countries are entering into a battle of wills and one-upmanship. Read about it all and vote for the worst travel failure in our poll.

Young & Restless

Most flights come with a restless toddler, but rarely does a 2-year-old have the power to get a whole family evicted. Little Nicole Vieau did just that on February 18 where her family was trying to fly back from Turks and Caicos to Boston on JetBlue. Nicole might not have wanted to fly, but her parents were able to restrain her in her seat with the seat belt fastened. Though no one in the family was drunk, belligerent or defiant, the child’s discomfort was seen as not “comply[ing] with crew member instructions,” according to a Jet Blue statement. The family was delayed a day in the Caribbean resulting in an additional $2,000 expense.

Humiliated in Hawaii

The TSA keeps a close watch on gadgets. Laptops, iPads, cell phones and…breast pumps>  Mother of four Amy Strand recently learned about this when traveling from Kaui back to Maui. Strand was stopped by security and the TSA agent inspected the breast pump equipment. The bottles were empty, but the cooler pack was in place. The agent informed her the pack must  be serving its medically warranted cooling purpose, so Strand was forced to pump breast milk into the bottles in plain view inside a women’s restroom. Strand has received an apology from the head of the TSA in Hawaii. The agent who caused the humiliating incident is receiving remedial training.

Monument Envy

India is now working to make a replica of the tallest Hindu temple in the world and get this, they’re remaking the tallest temple to be just a little taller. The original landmark the Angkor Wat in Cambodia is already an UNESCO World Heritage Site. The new one will cost upwards of $20 million and be on 40-acre plot of land. The Cambodian landmark is one of the most popular sites in Southeast Asia drawing millions of tourist in a year. The India replica will be completed in the next 10 years and it remains to be seen if it will drawn as many tourists.

A Too-Polished Passenger

Long flights often offer the chance to catch up on work or reading or a movie, but they aren’t the best opportunity to focus on personal grooming. Jeanie Daniels learned this lesson the hard way when she was painting her nails on a Southwest Airlines flight from California to Houston’s Hobby Airport. Daniels began to paint her nails, but was stopped by a flight attendant after the polish’s offensive odor. With just two nails left unpainted, Daniels snuck into the restroom to complete the job. Upon exiting, nails perfectly painted, Daniels was confronted by another flight attendant. An argument ensued and upon landing Daniel was met by two police officers. Charged with using “abusive profane language,” Daniels had a 10-hour stint in jail before a judge dismissed the charge.

Anchor Man

Cruise ships are packed with entertainment and refreshments, but sometimes after the bar closes passengers try to make their own fun. California passenger Rick Ehlert set out to do just that on a cruise from Mexico to Florida. Ehlert stole a bottle of vodka and then went into a crew area to try his hand at releasing the 18-ton anchor. Ehlert succeeded and stopped the ship for 3 hours. As an extra prank, Ehlert also tossed a life preserver overboard, leading the captain to suspect the worse and subject the 1,600 cruise passengers to a pre-dawn to muster drill to make sure no one had slipped over board. Having been arrested upon landing, Ehlert was sentenced  to substance abuse counseling and two months in prison for “bothersome crime.”
