Travel Tip: Traveling with Food or Gifts

If you’re going home for the holidays, you’re probably bringing a few gifts with you. Before you pack you bags, there are a few things you should remember.

All carry-on gifts should be left unwrapped to avoid any confusion or additional screening. Chances are, security will ask you to remove the wrapping anyway.

Now, unlike a few years ago when pies and cakes were being confiscated by the TSA, you’re now allowed to carry them on board. But get this–they may be subject to “additional screening.” You’re better off saving the baking for when you arrive

You probably know not to carry on drinks or alcohol, but did you know that the TSA’s liquid requirements also apply to gels? You’ll need to check the cranberry sauce and gravy.

That also means no carrying food packed in ice gel packs or dry ice. And for the sake of other passengers, use plastic wrap on anything that is perishable or has a strong odor.

Lastly, if you’re traveling overseas, remember to check local regulations. At the very least, you will be required to declare all food items.
