If you’re in the military or know someone who is, there are still a lot of special offers out there if you know where to look.
Military tickets have more flexibility than other discounted fares and are usually only available over the phone. American Airlines, for example frequently offers discounts to active-duty members who are on leave or furlough. Lower military fares are only available for certain routes.
Remember to ask about the checked baggage procedures for each airline. There has been controversy surrounding fees for checking military equipment. Be sure to understand what is and isn’t covered.
Space-available, or Space-A, flights can offer some great discounts. This program allows current or retired military and their families to travel on military aircrafts for next to nothing by filling up empty seats. Even if you get on a Space-A flight, you can get bumped off the plane for an official-duty passengers.
