Travel Tip: Interactive Airshows

Airplane enthusiasts may be familiar with the major airshows around the country.

But even first-timers can get something out of the interactive experiences that go along with the aerial acrobatics.

The annual Prairie Air Show in Illinois doesn’t just involve watching from the ground. You can also take to the skies on a helicopter ride. Or if you prefer to stay earthbound, try out aircraft simulators.

The AirVenture show in OshKosh doesn’t just showcase different types of planes. It also has workshops  for those who want to learn more about the process–we’re talking everything from building models to getting flying tips from certificated flight instructors.

If you’re really interested in getting a bragging rights experience, ask if there are special VIP packages for an extra fee.

At California Capital Airshow, you can buy a travel package instead of a general admission ticket that includes a behind-the-scenes tour of military aircraft, and a meet and greet with some of the world’s most famous pilots and performers.

Bottom line: What may seem like a specialized spectator sport can actually appeal to bigger audiences…if you know where to look.
