How To Deal With Dirty Hotels

Have you ever showed up to your hotel only to find out it’s dirty, dingy, or downright disgusting? Unfortunately, that happens all too often, so here’s what you should know…

First, don’t assume that brand-name hotels are all the same.

Many are franchises, meaning they don’t necessarily adhere to standards of quality and cleanliness.

Do your research.

Tripadvisor has its annual list of the dirtiest hotels in America, based on user reviews.

And believe, me, when you read those reviews, you’ll think twice about stepping foot in some of those hotels.

Cross-reference those findings with other sites like Yelp and with the Better Business Bureau.

If you do show up to a dirty room, ask the manager—not the front desk clerk—to move you to a room that has been thoroughly cleaned.

If that’s not an option, request calmly, but firmly, that they find a nearby hotel for a comparable price.

If nothing can be resolved at the time, keep records of everyone you speak with, take photos of the room, and immediately send a letter of complaint.

Don’t just send it to customer service.

Send a copy to the hotel manager, the company president and CEO.

Be realistic, honest and polite, and you’d be surprised how quickly someone at the top can solve a problem.
