Flying Vs. Driving: When Is Each The Best Way to Travel

Locations in this article:  San Francisco, CA

With airfares continuing to fall, flying has become affordable again. But, gas prices have also dropped. So how do you decide whether it is better to fly or drive?

On routes under 200 miles, it often makes more sense to drive rather than fly.

For instance, want to go from Maine to Boston?

That is about 162 miles; it will cost about $250 in airfare only $30 in gas with a standard sedan.

For longer routes, it depends on whether the route is served by multiple air carriers, which is translated in better competition with lower fares, or if it is a monopoly market with one airline.

For example it is not difficult to find roundtrip flights for $100 or less between LA and San Francisco.

That is comparable to the $80 or so it will cost you to drive.

In that case, it makes sense to get on the plane.

Websites from AAA to Mapquest offer fuel priced calculators based on your vehicles gas mileage and money saving tips to help you make your decision as to whether or not your going to fly or jump in your car.
