Jimmy Carter and Peter Greenberg at Incheon Airport, SeoulIt’s been a whirlwind travel week for me, spanning just a few continents. It started in Korea, where we broadcast the radio show from Seoul, which coincided with President Obama’s Asia trip.

Then off to report in Bangkok, one of my favorite cities in the world. I’ve been to Bangkok so many times that I have a set routine: breakfast by the Chao Phraya on the terrace at the Oriental (with the most wonderful orange juice in the world), lunch at the spice market (at the Four Seasons) and dinner on the streets. (My philosophy is that if it’s cooked, you can eat it).

I’m stopping in Seoul en route to do a story in Bangkok, which coincided with Obama’s visit today.

I first came here in 1979 and certain things remain, like the DMZ, not far from Seoul.

In 1979, when I first visited, it was described as the most dangerous place on earth … and that description could still be true when you think that the 3-mile strip of land separating the two Koreas is jammed with troops, guard posts, tanks, missiles, and bunkers. And it’s a great tour to boot.

DMZ Soldier at attentionMost visitors who travel to South Korea will run through a list of  required tourist attractions: temples, monuments and karaoke bars. But the more curious ones will also add a very special day trip to their itinerary—one that is a stark reminder that in at least one part of the world, a cold war still exists.

Karl I. Muller reports on his observations from the Demilitarized Zone at the border of North and South Korea.

A soldier stands tall, stern, and unmoving, his body half covered by a nearby wall, so in the event of enemy fire, he is partially shielded.
