This July, new members were inducted into one of the world’s most prestigious clubs–the UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) World Heritage Committee added 27 new places to the ever-growing list of World Heritage Sites.
With these new 27, UNESCO’s World Heritage List now numbers a total of 878 sites in 145 countries.
The list recognizes locations of major global importance, whether they are natural (like Australia’s Great Barrier Reef) or manmade (like the historic city center of Salzburg, Austria), that make up our world’s heritage.
Essentially, UNESCO’s goal is to preserve, protect and publicize these wonders to maintain them for future generations.
