Oasis of the Seas - photo by Wil ShrinerRoyal Caribbean’s massive new cruise ship Oasis of the Seas has arrived in Port Everglades, the cruise port of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, after sailing its way across the Atlantic from its construction site in Turku, Finland.

Early show logoThe Oasis of the Seas, the world’s largest cruise ship, will sail into Port Everglades, the cruise port of Fort Lauderdale on Friday.

As Peter reports for the Early Show, the ship is 20 stories high, as long as the Empire State Building is tall and has a capacity of 5400 passengers. And with the crew, it holds more than 7000 people.

Cruise ships dockedIn the wake of several highly publicized incidents involving missing passengers, sexual assault, and contagious noroviruses, the House has passed a new cruise safety bill that would introduce more preventative measures while changing the way onboard crimes are handled and reported.

Because most cruise ships are registered in foreign countries, companies have long had free reign from federal interference–most notably they have not had to report onboard crimes and illnesses to U.S. authorities. The Cruise Vessel Safety and Security Act of 2009 aims to reel them in.
