Travel Tip: Wi-Fi In The Sky Updates

It wasn’t that long ago that passengers would make calls from the airplane phone
just to say, “Guess where I’m calling from?”

These days, it’s Wi-Fi in the sky that’s the big story, so here’s what’s going
on up in the air.

Right now, most in-flight wireless service comes from a company called Aircell,
which relies on cell towers on the ground.

Their GoGo service is available on several airlines, including Delta, American,
Alaska, and AirTran.

Is it worth it? For leisure travelers, I can think of much better ways to pass
time without spending any money. After all, we do still read books, right?

But you can purchase a pass that works on all GoGo-equipped aircraft. A monthly
pass is about $35, so if you’re a frequent flier, that can work out to be a much
better deal than paying per flight.

JetBlue recently announced its deal with a company called AirSat. These guys
will rely on satellite service, which they claim will on par with the service we
have on the ground.

Of course, now that Wi-Fi in the sky is becoming more readily available,
travelers want to know ahead of time whether they’ll be able to stay connected
in the air.

American Airlines has launched a  Wi-Fi Widget, which allows customers to
identify which aircraft is equipped.
