Travel Tip: Traveling With Ski Equipment

Ever since airline companies started charging extra for checked baggage, it’s become increasingly expensive to travel with ski and snowboard equipment.

But there are some ways around it: Southwest is one of few airlines that doesn’t charge for the first and second checked bag.

It also doesn’t charge an additional fee for ski equipment that’s properly packaged.

A good tip is to put your skis, boots, jacket, and pants into a ski bag, and check a separate small suitcase with the rest of your clothes.

Just remember, you may be charged for overweight fees if it weighs more than 50 pounds.

To make life easier, consider shipping your gear ahead of time with FedEx or UPS. If you use advance ground service, it’s pretty affordable.

Or use a dedicated sports equipment shipping company like Luggage Forward or Luggage Club, which costs a bit more, but is door-to-door and relatively hassle-free.

And in these tough economic times, resorts are happy to throw in freebies, especially during slower periods.

Recently, even big-name resorts such as Vail, Beaver Creek and Breckenridge offered free ski-rental packages, so don’t be afraid to call up a human being and ask.
