Travel Tip: Regional Cooking Schools

Who doesn’t like to eat when they travel? That’s a no-brainer. But you can take it to the next level by also learning how to cook while you’re at it–with cooking classes that really get to the heart of regional cuisine.

If you can’t get enough of Jamaican jerk-style cuisine, you want to head to Jake’s. It’s a resort located in Jamaica’s off-the-beaten-path Treasure Beach. You can take a cooking class for only $20, where you’ll learn the secrets behind the special seasoning that makes this island cuisine so unique.

Further north, Nova Scotia is known for its seafood. So Trout Point Lodge offers hands-on cooking classes that teaches special techniques for preparing seafood, and even includes coastal field trips to see where your ingredients come from.

And if you want to explore Mexican cuisine beyond margaritas and enchiladas, you want to head to the culinary capital of Oaxaca. Here, a chef named Susana Trilling runs Seasons of My Heart cooking school.

You’ll tour the local market, learn the secrets of that complicated mole sauce, or even immerse yourself in a long weekend of tours, tastings and meeting the locals. And that’s just a sampling of what’s out there.

If you’re drawn to a destination, chances are you’ll find a way to learn about it through food.
