Travel Tip: Free Bike Rentals For Hotel Guests

Locations in this article:  Portland, OR Seattle, WA

When hotels hit upon a good concept, it spreads like wildfire.

That’s why we’re seeing more and more urban hotels encouraging guests to travel the healthy, eco-friendly way by offering free bike loans.

This trend started a few years ago with boutique hotels like The Bowery in New York offering bikes to guests. But these days, it’s not just independent hotels.

Some chains are also starting to get in on the act.

Fairmont Hotels in Canada have offered free bicycles on a first-come, first-serve basis since 2009. And now, BMW cruisers are available at Fairmont properties in the U.S. as well.

Starwood’s Element hotel brand offers free bikes for guests in properties around the country.

Ace Hotels can be found in Palm Springs, Seattle, New York, and Portland, where you’ll also find free rental bikes.

Of course, we know that biking is both earth- and wallet-friendly, but it’s not always safety-friendly, so use common sense.

Always know the appropriate hand signals and bike rules, especially if you’re in an unfamiliar city or country.

And since no one expects you to pack a bike helmet in your suitcase, ask at the front desk about borrowing one for the road.
