Getting fit doesn’t have to mean hours at the gym. One great way is to pick up a sport. Tennis is called the sport of a lifetime and can be your ticket to lifelong fitness. Learn the game or improve your skills at The Boulders, one of Tennis Magazine’s Top 50 tennis resorts, in Carefree, Arizona. Late last year tennis pro Dale Light began the Light Touch one-hour lesson designed to teach tennis in a holistic way.

Light shows you that winning tennis isn’t just about having a good technical game, it’s more about your attitude, the way your body moves and the way you respond to your opponent that ultimately determines success on the court.

Drawing on his own experiences in nutrition, coaching and Eastern Philosophy, Light’s approach to tennis is to create flow, ease and grace with the result a less stressful way to win a match. During the lesson Light analyzes a student’s movement and balance and then moves on to the technical components of the game. Anyone who has marveled at the ease that Roger Federer plays the game is watching Light’s theory at the highest level. Federer is always in balance, always in control, and times his shots with his breath. He’s very settled on the court which translates into the graceful way he plays.

While the Light Touch focuses on a lot more than actual tennis strokes, that fundamental part of the game is certainly not neglected. As a former college tennis player, I’ve had plenty of tennis instruction and yet it was Light who was the first teacher who was able to teach me how to toss the ball consistently every time. One little adjustment and my serve was revolutionized. Amazing!

Tennis fanatics will love the fact that the Boulders offers the chance to play on clay courts (cushioned hard courts are also available). Private lessons are $100 for one-hour. Drills are also offered throughout the week. In high season room rates are $359 and in low season a steal at $149.
