How to Adopt a Dog As You Travel: A CBS This Morning Report

You might think that rescuing a dog is a long, drawn-out process, but there are dogs around the world in need of families…and you can easily bring them home with you!

In Puerto Rico, the Sato Project and Save a Sato send dogs to the U.S., either to homes or to stateside shelters. Or you can adopt directly from those organizations as well as from the Mango Beach Shop in Rincon.

St. Thomas is part of the U.S. Virgin Islands, which means there is no special paperwork needed to adopt from the Humane Society of St. Thomas. You just need a health certificate clearing the dog to fly and a $105 fee for vaccinations. The Bolongo Bay Beach Resort offers adoptive pet owners a 30 percent discount on ocean-view and ocean-front rooms on stays five nights or longer.

In Turks and Caicos, the Potcake Place lets you “borrow” a dog for the day and take it to the beach. It’s no surprise that it also adopts 500-600 dogs off the island each year. You can also “borrow” a dog from the Aspen Animal Shelter in Aspen, Colorado.

Say you fall in love with a dog at ASPCA New York, which has hundreds of adoptable dogs, Le Parker Meridien will offer up to 20 percent off if you adopt a pet during your stay. And Kimpton’s 70 park avenue hotel will book a complimentary visit to the groomer including a bath, trim and mini-massage!
