Contest: The New Technology of the Road

We received tons of great entries for our New Rules vs. Old Rules contest on Facebook, Twitter and on our website.

Congratulations to Ryan S. Feignblatt whose old to new rule is:

Old rule: Airfone for incredibly expensive communication to the ground from 35,000 feet, and expensive international calling/roaming once there.
New rule: A few bucks to connect to Wi-Fi and Skype/IM for a fraction of the cost while in the air, and free wifi at internet cafes once there!

Ryan is now the proud owner of a signed copy of Peter’s latest book, New Rules of The Road. And you don’t have to be a winner to take home a copy. The e-book is on sale for just $3.99 on Amazon & Barnes and Noble. Or you can take home a copy of the paperback.

Plus, if you’re feeling lucky, we’re keeping this contest in full swing for the next two weeks so another two winners can get a signed copy. And since so many of your entries involved utilizing technology for travel we’ve jumped on board the techie train.

This week to win a signed copy, tell us how you’ve made technology work for you. Don’t just tell us the apps you have, we want to know the tools that let you travel smarter. Let us know in the comments below, on Facebook or tweet us @petersgreenberg.

To get the ball rolling here are some of Peter’s savvy, techie-traveler new rules.

  • Never get lost in an airport: Flysmart is an app with complete terminal directories to help find your gate, flight arrivals, departures, even ATMs and shops. You can also find a spot to eat using GateGuru.
  • Restaurant Reservations: Make life easier by booking your reservations a week in advance on OpenTable www.opentable.com to avoid being turned away at the door. Don’t know where to eat? Use the Chefs Feed app to find out where the top chefs like to eat in their cities.

Travel in Europe alot? We’ve found that an Italian cell phone and 3G key for anywhere-internet access have been the most economical ways to keep in touch -  rates in Italy are much less, and plans much more flexible than in France, for example. Our cell phone from TIM can be recharged anytime we’re in Italy – we keep the same phone number – for as little as 5 euros. And the 3G key, which makes it possible to work online while on the road or train as well as when in town, can be as little as 5 euros a month. We just recharge when we arrive in Italy.

I carry my laptop and iphone as my main tools of the day. I am also streamlining my chargers, I am using an i-go green charger that charges the laptop and one usb device.
