Travel Tip: Travel Myths Debunked

Let’s face it, as much as we travel, there are still three common travel myths that still persist. Here are the facts behind the myths:

Will electronics crash my plane? No aviation authorities have found conclusive evidence that cellular signals affect the plane’s communications, navigation, or flight control.

Just recently, the FAA even gave American Airlines pilots permission to use iPads in the cockpit. But the bans on electronics won’t be lifted without extensive–and expensive–testing.  The bottom line is, you still need to follow the existing rules so put those electronics away.

Another common myth is that X-ray machines can erase the hard drive on your laptop. They won’t, but you do need to keep your electronics clear of magnetronic metal detectors. The strong magnetic pulse can erase your hard drive.

If you’re renting a car, don’t assume that you’re covered by your credit card. In many cases, that only gives you secondary coverage, which only kicks in when you’ve exhausted your personal insurance.  And what they don’t tell you right away is that coverage may not include loss of use, which is a daily fee incurred if a rental car has to sit  in the shop.
