Travel Tip: Winter Park Programs

Locations in this article:  Buffalo, NY

Just because the weather is getting colder doesn’t mean you have to stay indoors. Here’s what’s happening in our park system these days.

Of course the Colorado Rockies are best known for skiing. But for those of us who prefer to keep our bones intact, you can take a guided snowshoe tour and winter photography hikes with Rocky Mountain National Park rangers.

Or you can stay in the car and drive the Peak to Peak Highway in the Arapaho National Forest, a 55-mile scenic drive that gets you a first-class view of the Rockies.

California isn’t all about warm weather and sunshine. In fact, its state parks are known for cross-country skiing. And if you really want the all-around experience, go to Grover Hot Springs State Park near Lake Tahoe, where you can start the day with skiing and end it in a natural hot spring.

And don’t overlook other units of the National Park Service. Buffalo National River in northern Arkansas is still accessible in winter, which is also the best time to photograph the elk population and the area’s natural rock and ice formations.
