Travel Tip: Bioluminescence

Here’s a trivia question: What’s one natural phenomenon that only occurs in a handful bays and lagoons around the world? It’s called bioluminescence.

In bioluminescent bays and lagoons, living organisms actually light up the water. The majority of these bio-bays are located close to home in places like Puerto Rico and Jamaica.

While large boats––even those with glass bottoms––are one way to observe the glow, look for a company that leads smaller guided trips with on-water experiences like kayaking or canoeing.

In central Florida, Indian River and Mosquito Lagoon light up as you kayak through the waters. Maximize the experience by going during a full moon, or as close to one as possible.

It is difficult to capture the effect on film, but if you do bring a camera, make sure to to turn off the flash during exposure.

And remember, these are living organisms. In Places like Mosquito Bay in Vieques, sunscreen and bug spray are not allowed, since the chemicals can kill off the microrgannisms that make the water glow.
