Hidden Gems: Sheep & Cape Kidnappers, New Zealand

Locations in this article:  Auckland, New Zealand

The official animal of New Zealand may be the kiwi bird, but many think of it as the country of sheep. Well, the old legend is true: There are more sheep than people in the country. In fact, there are about 10 sheep for every person in New Zealand!

While the sheep may seem ubiquitous, they can also inspire some unexpected travel experiences. The Farm at Cape Kidnappers in Hawke’s Bay is a 6,000-acre working sheep and cattle farm, where guests can get a real taste of farm life along with some incredible rural views.

And for those who want even more of the farm experience, Clifton Station has shearing demonstrations using both ancient and modern techniques.

But it’s not just about sheep in this North Island escape. Cape Kidnappers also has the largest and most-accessible gannet bird colony in the world.

Watch it all here in the second in our series of Hidden Gems: New Zealand.
