Spirit’s New Carry-On Baggage Charges

Airlines & Airports, Budget Travel, CBS News, Luggage & Packing on April 7, 2010 2:40 pm

Spirit Airlines - New Carry-on Baggage FeeSpirit Airlines, a budget carrier based in Florida, announced a plan on Tuesday that would charge passengers up to $45 per carry-on bag.

They are the first airline to implement a cash for carry-on plan.

Passengers might be used to overweight baggage fees, but if these new fees prove to be successful for the airlines, all luggage might become excess baggage.

On The Early Show this morning, Peter talked about the carry-on fee and why he hopes the new charges will not fly.

The other airlines will wait and see. If Spirit can bring people in with $1 tickets (while slapping on $150 in extra charges), it will offset the rest of us that will boycott.

If it works, the airline copycats will follow suit. Bad, so so bad for the traveling public.

Peter, I guess there’s no such thing as bad press. Maybe Spirit is doing this to generate lots of publicity and then by August 1st, they’ll rethink it all after getting their name out there with this controversial and nasty new charge. Things that make you go, g-r-r-r!

Here’s the dilemma: The only place you could vacation without luggage is a nudist resort. But you’ll need to carry on more than 3 ounces of sunscreen!

If you don’t fight Spirit you encourage other airlines for the same robbery. Simply, don’t fly them and let them fail.

I would say that it is about time. If people have to pay for checked luggage and not for carry on, guess what! They will bring on half a piano and try to put it into the overhead compartment. The never was a free anything. Pay as you bring.

The bottom line – The more luggage the more weight on the aircraft and more fuel cost! Not to mention the guy in the baggage area that will have back and arm problems in his early 30 or 40 years of age. If you paid attention, they are lowering the fares up front. This will benefit the lite travelor. This will put a stop to all you travelors who think the airline is uhaul and want to carry as much as you can for free.
ARE YOU KIDDING ME -You should see how many poeple show up with so much luggage as if they were moving one whole room. Some people come in with 8 to 10 large ones. If you dont like it please tell them, I not gonna fly with you anymore and now go buy at ticket at the other airline for the price of at least 3 times as much. You all have choice on who to fly – Do the math and then come back with your negative comments.
