If you’re a commuter, you know that an EZPass is a great way to save time at tollbooths. And now some car rental companies offer their own version of the EZPass.

If you rent with Avis or Budget, an electronic pass called EToll lets you drive through toll plazas without having to dig for change or wait in line.

The pass costs $2.50 a day plus the toll costs.

Right now, this option is available in the Northeast, Colorado, Texas, parts of Chicago, even Puerto Rico.

A similar option is available with National Car Rental and its sister company, Alamo. Customers can use an E-Z Pass in New Jersey and cities such as Chicago, Houston, Boston, New York, and several others.

Travelocity has a program where you can get a travel pass when you book car rentals for travel in the Northeast and Midwest.

They’ll send you an electronic toll tag in the mail.

When the trip is over, you mail it back and your credit card is charged for the tolls, plus a $1.99 a day.

So the real question is, is it worth it?

Well, even if you save gas by avoiding long lines, that won’t offset the daily fee.

The real question is how much you time is worth.

There are sometimes specials run by the rental companies that include toll passes. For example: Dollar are currently running a promo in Florida where if you use your AMEX you get a discounted rate and a prepaid Pass24®. I have seen other specials by most of the majors along these lines - just check with your favorite car rental discount site before booking.
