It’s no longer prohibitively expensive to make or receive international calls on your cell phone.

There are several companies out there now that make it cheaper. Here’s how it works….

To start, you need a phone that has Internet access, like a smartphone, a BlackBerry or a Treo.

Then there’s a company called Truphone that uses Wi-Fi, not broadband to connect your call.

MaxRoam is designed for travelers, so people can call you for a few cents a minute, rather than you making an expensive call to the U.S.

The trick to this company is that when you sign up online, you get a local phone number in the area code where you live.

If you live in San Francisco, your area code is 415.

The downside is that everyone can always find you, thinking you’re close to home.
