Renting a car these days is getting a little more difficult as gas prices climb higher.

Car-rental companies are now running short on the smaller cars, as demand for more fuel-efficient vehicles has gone up.

As a result, you may find yourself getting upgraded to a larger vehicle.

But do you really want one? With a larger vehicle, your mileage goes down.

And remember, don’t fill your car up near the airport, where fuel prices can be outrageous.

In fact some car rental companies are requiring proof that you filled up the tank within 10 miles of the return site.

But there is some good news. Hertz has eliminated some of the fuel-gouging if you bring a car back with an empty tank.

Instead of charging $7 or $8 a gallon, they’ll now charge you a flat fee of $7 plus the regular market price for filling up the tank.
