It’s been about two weeks since Hurricane Ike smashed into the Texas coast.
In Ike’s wake, the port city of Galveston has been devastated, while Houston’s environs also sustained significant damage.
The main local power company, Centerpoint Energy, is deploying teams into the areas still without power and hopes to have completed the vast majority of repairs by Sunday.
But a new map shows just how much farther they have to go…

A second Houston-area utility, Entergy, reported restoring power to all of its nearly 400,000 East Texas customers. But they said that roughly 7,200 homes were so damaged that they simply can’t utilize the available power.

Meanwhile, on the East Coast, Tropical Storm Kyle is forecast to skip much of the American Atlantic coast and instead hit Canada’s maritime provinces. The last time a major hurricane struck this area was Hurricane Juan in 2003, which caused over $100 million in damage and two deaths.

At this point, most forecasters expect Kyle to strengthen as it approaches the coastline, with the distinct possibility that the tropical storm could reach hurricane status before it makes landfall. The National Hurricane Center tentatively projects this landfall in early hours of Monday morning in the province of New Brunswick next door to Maine.
