With flight delays becoming increasingly common, this is when you want to consider travel insurance. But, protecting yourself doesn’t have to mean paying sky-high rates.

While comprehensive travel insurance can add up to hefty fees, even the cheapest policies can protect you.

Delay insurance can cover your hotel, meals and clothing expenses—in many cases, that’s all you’ll need.

AIG Travel Guard’s Essential Basic plan costs about $30 for a $500 domestic ticket, and will insure you up to $100 a day.

Travel Insured International offers “Worldwide Trip Protector Lite,” which starts at $15, and covers trip cancellation and interruption, emergency medical and evacuation, and lost or delayed baggage.

Even airlines are getting into it, such as Air Canada’s “travel assistant” service. It costs about $25 each way, and covers your hotel room and alternate airfare.

But, take my advice: If you’re buying travel insurance, get it from a third-party source, not the vendor with which you’re traveling.
