Save Time, Money, and Travel Better with Peter's Daily Travel Tips

When renting a car abroad, older travelers may find themselves paying extra, or even unable to rent a car altogether. Here’s what you need to know.

Car rental agencies in other countries are often franchised, meaning that the rules vary depending on where you travel.

In Ireland, for example, Budget has a maximum age restriction of 75 years.

Meanwhile, Alamo won’t rent to drivers older than 74, and charges drivers 71 and above €10 a day for insurance.

In the Czech Republic, Hertz has a cutoff age limit of 70.

And with National, you won’t find any age limits … unless you’re renting in Cyprus or Italy, where the maximum age is 75.

Don’t get turned away from the rental counter—do your research ahead of time, and contact the specific office where you’re renting.

If you can provide a doctor’s letter stating that you’re in good health, or if you’re willing to pay for extra insurance, they may be willing to bend the rules.
