Secret Seats on Airplanes

Travel News on March 11, 2008 12:06 pm

Airplane at GateMost people know that the exit row on most planes offers extra room on otherwise-cramped flights.

But exit row seats aren’t too easy to come by.

Fortunately, there are other secret seats on airplanes, depending on the plane’s configuration and the airline flying it.

Find out what they are, and how you can take advantage of them….

I’ve found that secret seats haven’t worked for me in a general sense. The do work when I know the airline. For example, I’ve tried the 744 economy at the rear two abreast at the window and did not find that very helpful. The cabin was significantly narrowed at that point (the reason for 2 vs. 3 seats), and i felt more cramped than in the bulkhead I tried going the other direction.

As you alluded to, bulkhead may or may not be helpful. For example, there may be two rows listed for bulkhead but only one that actually has more legroom (Hawaiian Airlines Rows 25 and 26 (763)).

When I went to Japan last year on United, on 747 International Configuration 1 economy plus, Row 17-20 H&J are reserved for crew. The seats directly behind them, row 21 H&K have HUGE leg room, about twice the normal pitch.
They may be hard to get but they are REALLY worth it.

Are seats 17A and 17B reserved on international flights because the crew knows the secret about them?

Mike Farrell: If you were listening, you would have heard him say, “On international flights, these seats are reserved for the crew. But on domestic flights, anyone can use them!”

Anonymous: They’re probably reserved for specific reasons, maybe like if the flight is really long (or at least much longer than domestic flights), the flight attendants or crew may not be able to take standing ALL that time, so they have a place to sit when they’re on break or not attending to someone.

James L.: This depends on the structure of the plane. In America, we name the way our planes are seated as “Boe 707″, or 777-200, or names like that. If they have the same plane structure on other airlines (which they probably do), there should still be secret seats.

Jason: This is all there is. Not much, but at least you get a few tips. He should have some other tips for airplanes as well, though.
