KOSOVO DECLARES ITS INDEPENDENCE FROM SERBIA – The New York Times
Tens of thousands of ethnic Albanians cheered and celebrated in the streets when the province of Kosovo declared independence from Serbia on Sunday. After a civil war that took 10,000 lives 10 years ago and subsequent years of being ruled by the United Nations, Kosovo’s bid to be regarded as a country of Europe is the latest incident in the dismemberment of the former Yugoslavia. Although some Western countries—such as Britain, France and Germany—contend that Serbia’s “brutal subjugation of Kosovo’s ethnic Albanian majority” gave Kosovo reason to declare independence, other nations believe Kosovo’s independence breaches international law and will prompt other secessionist movements worldwide. Proclaiming their independence to be “null and void,” Russia demanded an emergency meeting with United Nations Security Council, but no resolution was produced.

MILITARY MEMBER WITH TRAINING GRENADES DETAINED BY TSA - MSNBC
It’s bad enough when absent-minded passengers forget they have a gun in their carry-on, but a 20-year-old member of the military actually “forgot” two training grenades in his carry-on bag. This time, fortunately, the Transportation Security Administration discovered the grenades using a belt scanner at Yakima Air Terminal. Police evacuated the area while explosive experts from the Army’s Yakima Training Center dismantled the grenades. The grenades contained live fuses but had no explosives packed around them.

FLIERS CHOOSE SECURITY LINE, BUT WILL WAIT BE SHORTER? – USA Today
If you like having choices, consider flying out of Salt Lake City International Airport; in hopes of making security checkpoints faster, the airport is giving travelers an opportunity to choose which line in which they would like to wait. Calling it the “Black Diamond Project,” the Transportation Security Administration will divide travelers into three groups, depending on if passengers are traveling with kids, the number of carry-on bags, and other factors. The program started Thursday and may even be initiated at the Denver airport this week.

BRITAIN’S BEST PUB? – The Times (UK)
Sure, Britain has thousands of pleasant pubs with plentiful pints to go around, but have you ever wondered which pub in was the best in the entire country? The 100-year-old Old Spot Inn in Dursley, Gloucestershire won the 2008 Pub of the Year award from the Campaign for Real Ale. Interestingly, this pub has no jukebox, pool table, fruit machine or “theme,” but it it’s hailed for not following the latest trends. The licensee Steve Herbert said, “Our drinkers come first, which is why the food stops at 8 p.m. during the week. We don’t do chips either.” Instead, the pub claims to offer roaring fires, good company and a tasty pint.
