Most aren’t huge surprises, but are discouraging to hear: If you buy a nonrefundable ticket, nothing short of a flash flood or death in the family will get the airlines to waive the change fee. Also, airlines expect that about 1 percent of checked bags will be lost, damaged or otherwise mishandled, but don’t expect reimbursement in many cases. And, the number of discounted seats on airlines may be more limited than you expect.

Last year, when a storm forced American Airlines to divert 130 planes from Dallas-Fort Worth, the flights weren’t tracked on an automated system … but with a legal pad. The staff could be found frantically writing down all the delay details, including whether the crew had maxed out their work hours and how long the planes sat on the runway (many more than four hours).
