Save Time, Money, and Travel Better with Peter's Daily Travel Tips

Travel companies now send text messages alerting passengers of delays and cancellations.

But, do you want those messages crowding your cell phone in-box? Here’s what you need to know.

New services from online travel sites like Orbitz, Travelocity and Expedia send text alerts to keep you updated when you travel.

They’ll let you know if your airport is experiencing delays or if your flight’s been cancelled.

These alerts are usually free—other than any costs for receiving texts that may come from your cell provider—and are updated constantly.

There are drawbacks to this service, though.

Be aware that if you sign up with one itinerary, and then change your travel plans, you may get alerts for your old arrangements.

And the alerts can come at any time.

Which means if you’ve got a 7 AM flight, you could get a gate change alert in the middle of the night.
