Save Time, Money, and Travel Better with Peter's Daily Travel Tips

If you’re planning on buying antiques or cultural artifacts abroad, do you know what you’ll need to actually bring what you buy back in the country?

Americans have sometimes been arrested while traveling for possessing undocumented antiques or artifacts.

In many countries, especially in Turkey, Egypt, and Mexico, what you’ll need is an official museum export certificate, if your items are authentic.

If they are reproductions, you’ll need to document them as such.

The documentation or certificate may usually be obtained at the country’s national museum.

You must also have a receipt from the seller documenting your purchase.

The safest way to purchase items is from reputable vendors, who will often provide you with the museum export certificate.

If you are still doubtful, contact the Consular Section of the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate.

They’ll inform you about local laws and the proper procedures to follow.
