Banned Airlines

Daily Travel Tips, Europe, Plane Crashes, Travel Tips on February 28, 2007 2:13 pm

Did you know that the European Union, Switzerland and Norway have banned 92 airlines from flying into their airports? Read on to find out which ones were banned — and why.

The 92 airlines banned by Europe are mostly very small carriers, usually based in Africa or Asia, and few of them fly anywhere near Europe.

But they were placed on the airline blacklist by Europeans for failing to adhere to basic safety standards, or for using antiquated planes.

Most were concentrated in a handful of African nations that the EU deemed to have insufficient aviation safety procedures.

As you might expect, a few blacklisted airlines, including Thailand’s Phuket Air and Swaziland Airlink, are protesting their inclusion on the list, which the EU has promised to update every three months.

To see the list for yourself online, go to the European Union’s homepage.
